The replay is available now, and we covered the following themes:

  • submitted her question ahead of time, and asked:

    • ‘I'd love a discussion on how much of the supposed misogyny in the early Middle Ages actually comes from contemporary historians' bias imposed on period and not actually from the early Middle Ages? I know it was there, obviously, but it seems like it's more prevalent in the secondary commentary than it is in the primary sources. Thoughts? You've mentioned this in some of your other gender posts, but I'd love to hear more!’

  • Whether there was continuity in the pre-Christian role of women across the conversion to Christianity

  • What it looked like for Christian and pre-Christian belief systems to engage and interact

  • Whether the role of Bertha of Kent in her husband’s conversion unintentionally affected gender roles

  • The influence of Christian writers on the written sources of the time
