Lately I have been going back in time with my reading life. I found your post at the perfect moment. The more things change, the more they stay the same especially as I move on one decade after another it becomes so evident. Thank you for sharing. I took Medieval English lit in college so this was particularly enjoyable for that reason.

Thank you for this thoughtful piece and the beautiful example from Beowulf. I hope my son grows up feeling that he can express himself fully (he certainly does now as a 2 year old (!)) and I hope that he never feels he has to ‘man up’ or hide his feelings xx

Aha, yes, my 8-month-old also has no issues with expressing himself either! I’m glad you enjoyed it 🥰

Hi Holly, loved this piece & the Beowulf excerpt! The realization you had listening to that podcast resonated, I had a similar experience and feeling of how infrequently men in my life open up about those feelings compared to women in my life. Thanks for sharing!

I’m glad you enjoyed it! The excerpts I shared really stood out for me when I read Beowulf for some academic work I did a few years ago: they felt so modern, so current, despite having been written so long ago 🥰
