Bertha's Tale: Table of Contents
Everything You Need For This Serialised Novel
Bertha’s Tale - in progress
Bertha’s Tale recounts the life of the first Christian queen in England, a historical figure from the sixth and seventh centuries AD. Around the sketchy framework of her life that can be derived from the surviving written and archaeological sources, I have woven a fictional tale that strives to fill in the gaps, telling her story from her perspective (unlike most of the narratives that tell her story from the perspectives of the men around her). The final episode (yet to be published at the time of putting together this TOC) will include a historical endnote sorting fact from fiction.
This serial was a ‘practice’ attempt at writing my first novel-length fiction work. As a result, you will see some experimentation along the way. I played with different perspectives, different writing styles, and different instalment lengths.
Once complete, a heavily revised and edited version of Bertha’s Tale, erasing all these inconsistencies, will be available for paying subscribers of Telling Their Tales. Subscribe or upgrade now to avoid missing out!
Bertha’s Tale
These instalments are listed in chronological order. So, the episode at the top is Episode 1, then Episode 2, and so on down to Episode 20 (to be published September 2024).
We first meet Bertha when she is still a Frankish princess, just arrived in Kent. Here she will meet her betrothed, the husband chosen for her by men more powerful than she is, and whom she has never met.
